Even-Link Rounding & Swingarm Axle Slot Fitment
Roller chains need an even number of links to avoid a weak offset link. Compare how rounding up or down shifts your rear axle:
| Chain Option | Even Link Count | Back-Solved Center (C) | Rear Axle Shift | Slot Fitment (±22 mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended (Round Up) | 106 Links | 598.45 mm | +13.45 mm (Back) | Fits Adjuster Slot |
| Shorter Option (Round Down) | 104 Links | 582.443 mm | -2.56 mm (Forward) | Fits (Shorter Wheelbase) |

How to Calculate Chain Length: The ASME B29.1 Formula
A roller chain drive is two tangent spans joining the pitch circles of the driver (N1) and driven (N2) sprockets, plus the wrap around each. When the tooth counts differ, the spans tilt, which adds the third term of the standard ASME B29.1 / ISO 606 equation. To size a whole transmission, pair it with the chain and sprocket drive calculator.
1. Exact chain length in links (L)
- L
- = chain length in pitches (links). Round up to an even integer.
- C
- = shaft center distance, in the same unit as P.
- P
- = chain pitch, for example 15.875 mm for 520, 525 and 530 chain.
- N1, N2
- = tooth counts of the driver and driven sprockets.
2. Back-solved center distance and axle shift
A real chain only comes in whole links, almost always an even count, so your true center distance moves by ΔC = C(exact) − C(target). That shift is what the rear axle adjuster has to absorb. For fixed housings and frame builds, solve take-up travel with the sprocket center distance calculator.
Worked Example: 600cc Sportbike on a 520 Chain
A rider fits a 15T front sprocket (N1 = 15) and a 45T rear (N2 = 45) on a 520 chain (P = 15.875 mm), with a nominal swingarm center distance of C = 585 mm.
Step 1: Linear span
2(585) / 15.875 = 73.701 L
Step 2: Sprocket wrap
(15 + 45) / 2 = 30.000 L
Step 3: Angular term
15.875 × 30² / (4π² × 585) = 0.619 L
Step 4: Total and shift
104.32 L → 106 links (+13.45 mm)

Chain Pitch, Roller Diameter and Tensile Strength Reference
Accurate length needs the exact nominal pitch. If the sideplate stampings have worn off, measure across three pins with calipers and identify the chain with the caliper roller chain size calculator, or check tip and root dimensions with the sprocket diameter calculator.

Tensile strength is the maker's minimum for ANSI and ISO chain and the average for motorcycle chain. ≈ marks values without a manufacturer table.
Typical values: tensile strength varies by manufacturer and chain grade. Once a motorcycle chain stretches past its wear limit (about 1% for O-ring and X-ring chains) or a modern 11/12-speed bicycle chain past 0.5%, its pitch no longer matches the sprocket. Check yours with the chain wear and stretch percentage calculator.
